Room For More

‘Room For More’ dips a toe into the infrastructure of Idlewild, a historically Black resort town in Northwest Michigan that presents a righteous history and complex present nearly too great to hold.

In the quiet cold of the off season, stillness gave way to future— or rather what remains to hold it. As an East Side Detroiter, blight and disinvested infrastructure have always held a complicated space in my body. What many consider shameful representations of the present I have come to understand as invaluable proof of past lives. The structures that stand today remind us of not just of what was, but what can still be: there is room for more.

Community
Engagement

A camping trip was organized for Detroiters to northwest Michigan to engage with the project deeper. Participants tent camped, visited the exhibition in Traverse City, and finally visited Idlewild themselves learning from residents and offering their time to a community service project helping to complete raised gardens at Idlewild's senior center deepening a long held bond between Idlewild and Detroit's Black communities.
